Top 3 Cryptocurrency Wallets 2018 – Best Reviewed Cryptocurrency Wallets

How do you securely store cryptocurrency? The answer is by using a trusted top of the range ‘cryptocurrency wallet’.

At its core, a cryptocurrency wallet is a piece of software that safeguards your private and public keys to your digital assets whether you’re using Bitcoin, Ripple, ICO tokens or Ethereum.

Unlike a traditional leather wallet, a cryptocurrency wallet can potentially hold hundreds of different cryptocurrencies, all meticulously organised so that you’ll never accidentally spend the wrong one. It will tell you how much you spend, withdraw or deposit at any given time, so you’ll never be caught off guard.

The most important reason why you need a cryptocurrency wallet is to ensure that your funds are never at risk of ending up in the wrong hands. A good wallet uses inviolable encryption and acts as a secure safety box for your private data.

This is especially topical, given that since early 2018 we’ve seen increasing news regarding the volatility of cryptocurrencies. With a reliable cryptocurrency wallet, I guarantee that your assets will be safe at all times.

So here are my top 3 recommended options:

If you hold and trade in Bitcoin, Dash, Zcash or Ethereum, the Trezor hardware wallet is a must have.

It uses state of the art encryption and second factor authentication to keep your private keys as secure as if they were held in a steel vault. If this all sounds overly complicated, don’t worry – the Trezor is one of the easiest and quickest wallets to use.

As with other cryptocurrency wallets, the Trezor works completely offline. Your private keys never leave the wallet, which means that it’s virtually impossible to hack. You are in control of your assets at all times and since all transactions are completed without the internet, you don’t have to worry about compromising your wallet with viruses or malware.

At it’s surface, the Trezor is a lightweight device with a simple, modern interface. This makes it a breeze to carry around. To make a transaction from the Trezor, you simply connect it to your computer using a USB cable (note that you don’t have to have your wallet connected to receive cryptocurrency).

You will also be provided with a safety code that will allow you to recover your currency in case you ever misplace your wallet. Getting pick-pocketed won’t be an issue.  Your access funds will be comppletely secured with its password protected feature.

The cons?  The screen is on the smaller side so if you don’t have excellent eyesight, making out the long codes and addresses can be a challenge. But with adequate lighting this shouldn’t be too much of an issue. In addition, the USB cable that comes with it is rather short. This makes it slightly inconvenient when you’re plugging it into certain devices.  And lastly as mentioned before, the Trezor currently only caters for limited cryptocurrencies.  If you hold assets in several, be sure to check compatibility.

Having said that, Trezor are planning to extend the currencies that are compatible with their products, which makes it a solid purchase.

Right off the bat, I love the cool futuristic design of the KeepKey. It looks like an ultra secure external hard-drive, which already starts to convince me that this device is very secure. The back is smooth aluminium and the front is a digital display that you can read easily.

The KeepKey supports Bitcoin, Ethereum, Dash, Testnet, Litecon and Namecoin. That’s gives you a few more options than the Trezor I talked about earlier.

This wallet is simple but effective to use. Simply plug it in with a USB and use a Chrome extension to make your online purchase or transaction. You will need your personal PIN, which is an important security measure. Compared to other wallets on the market the build quality of the KeepKey is noticeably better. The aluminium is a nice touch and feels much sturdier than say the hard plastic interface of the Trezor.

Now for the weak points. In terms of the software, the actual functions of the KeepKey are relatively limited. If you’re looking for a wallet that will securely hold your currency and facilitate simple transactions, the KeepKey is great. However as soon as you need to do something more complicated such as extracting multiple addresses, you will see limitations.

Moreover unlike the Trezor, I’m not convinced that the manufacturers of KeepKey are as concerned about developing the software in the future for example to amass more currencies. Again this won’t be a problem if your assets are compatible and transactions relatively straightforward.

So if you want an aesthetically pleasing, well made, no nonsense wallet – the KeepKey comes highly recommended.

The VUVIV Ledger Nano S is one of the best trusted models on the market. It’s roughly the size of a USB stick, which makes it small and handy to carry around wherever you go.

Both the device and the two accompanying USB cables feel like their good quality and won’t fray even in heavy use. The wallet itself is encased in an aluminium cover, which will protect it from being dropped on the floor. The currencies supported include Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin and Altcoins.

This wallet has all the of the essential safety encryptions you need in a secure cryptocurrency wallet. If you were to lose the wallet, you’re given a recovery code. Access your funds and restore data. Always carry this code separate from your wallet to maximise your safety.

The Nano S is very easy to use. You will only need to operate two buttons to set it up, and again don’t forget to write down your recovery code! Plug it into your computer, follow the step-by-step instructions and you’re ready to go. To illustrate the point, even my 87-year old grandmother was able to operate this wallet so it’s also ideal if you’re new to cryptocurrency. It’s also fast, as soon as you plug it in you will be able to browse and manage your transactions in minutes.

My only concern with the Nano S is really the size. This goes both ways, if you’re keen on a tiny device that you can store with your other USB’s, you should choose the Nano S. However if like me you lose things easily, you may want to go for more substantial hardware.
